At the moment valuations of websites are very low for the value they can bring. One of the considerations you have in arriving at a valuation is how much revenue you could add to the site. There many things you could add to an under developed site such as the obvious adsense but one check I like to do is to see the rate that text link brokers such as text-link-ads.com place on the site.
To do this create a dummy account on their site as it does not seem possible to delete sites you add to your list. So if you use your normal account it will become full of these tests.
I like to test out single page adverts on the home page and other pages with good pr. For a good site in a good market you may be able to sell 3-6 adverts quickly to add to the monthly revenue.

When inventory.overture.com the free keyword research tool died people thought the world of free keyword research had ended. Stepping in to fill the vacuum are the people at wordtracker who have create a free tool that is delivers 100 keywords in a very fast and friendly interface.
It even has lots of options to add the tool to your browser or bookmark it.
See Free Keyword Suggestion Tool from Wordtracker
Thanks to Ed Dale for pointing that out on his great blog the tubbynerd.

To get a good grounding in selling website I would take a look at the selling your website FAQ pdf at sitepoint.
It covers the basics of valueing your site, transferring the site to a new owner, protecting yourself during the process and where to sell your site (on sitepoint of course).
There are of course other places to selling your website.

One of the factors you should be taking into account is Google Page Rank across the website. But is it correct? Has it been faked?
There appear to be several ways to fake Page Rank for example using a cloaking script that shows the googlebot something different than the rest of us sees. See http://www.monetizers.com/fake-pr.php for an example. Although I think this method is now detected by Google
One quick way to test PR is to use one of the many PR testers
What value do you place on PR? In particular Text Link brokers require pages to have a certain level of PR and Alexa Ranking before you can place an advert on your site. So the more high PR pages you have in a site the greater the value.

As I trawl through the websites for sale listing it has become very noticeable that there are lots of Photoshop Tutorial Websites appearing. I am sure for some people it is a pretty good business after all it involves:-
- Going to Elance getting someone to create a tutorial to create a glassy effect widget or something similar
- Post it on your tutorial site
- Listing the new tutorial on the numerous tutorial listing sites
- Watch the traffic come in and monetize the site with yahoo publishers network or google adsense
- Repeat or the traffic slows down
I suppose I could train someone to organise it all … Not sure it is the business for me. Any thoughts? Am I missing something?

Welcome to the first post on selling (and buying) your website.
There are a vast number of different places to buy or sell your website.
If you are just starting out there are several auction and announcement type sites that are great initial places to visit.
I’ll give some feedback on each of these sites in later posts but for now here is a quick list.
